Binocular
FACTORS TO CONSIDER
Binocular performance balances on three legs. Magnification (how close it makes things appear), Resolution (sharpness and clarity) and Light Transmission (brightness). Ignoring a single leg of the performance tripod at the expense of the others erodes a binocular's optical quality. Powerful magnification is useless if the image is dim or fuzzy. A larger binocular may provide greater magnification, but it requires larger objective lenses to enhance resolution and brightness. When considering brightness, there are limits to the amount of light the eye can receive. During the day, it needs to eliminate some light, while at night it needs to transmit more. Therefore, some larger objective binoculars are ideal for night while smaller objective binoculars are better for day. Most importantly, know the intended use and try before you buy.
Magnification or Power: Binoculars are referred to by a combination of numbers, e.g., 7x 35mm. The first number refers to the power of the binocular. It indicates the size to which an object is enlarged.
Resolution: Resolution is a measurement of the binocular's ability to distinguish fine detail. Better resolution also provides more intense color. Resolution varies directly with the size of the objective lens. All else being equal, a larger objective lens will always deliver more detail than a smaller one regardless of the magnification. Actual resolution hinges on a variety of factors: the quality of the optical components, light transmission through the binoculars, existing atmospheric conditions, optical and mechanical alignment (collimation) and visual acuity of the individual.
Light Transmission: The size of the objective lenses determines the amount of light that reaches the eye. The larger the objective lenses, the greater the brightness and sharpness of the image seen through the binocular.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Coated Lenses: This means that some lens and prism surfaces are coated to produce a reasonably bright image at a modest cost.
Exit Pupil: The exit pupil diameter is the number attained by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification. The exit pupil appears as the bright circular area inside the eyepiece. The larger the exit pupil, the better it is for use in poor light.
Field of View: The field of view is the width in feet/meters of the area you can see from a distance of 1000 yards/meters away.
Fully Coated Lenses: All air-to-glass surfaces are coated for an even brighter view.
Fully Multi-Coated: The brightest and most expensive option, where all surfaces are treated with multiple layers for optimum light transmission.
Lens Coating: Coatings reduce the reflection internally and externally, which increases the amount of light that reaches the eye.
Light Transmission: The size of the objective lenses determines the amount of light that reaches the eye. The larger the objective lenses, the greater the brightness and sharpness of the image seen through the binocular.
Magnification: Magnification is indicated by the first number given, e.g. 7x. The 7x means that you will see an object seven times closer than if you were viewing with the naked eye.
Multi-Coated: This means that the manufacturer applied multiple coats of anti-reflective layers to most of the lens and prism surfaces.
Objective Lens Diameter: The objective lens diameter is indicated by the second number, e.g. 35mm. This number indicates how much light is able to enter the binocular. The larger this number is the better your sight will be in lower light conditions.
Porro Prisms: This design has been a proven performer for over 100 years. The distinctive, off-set binocular housings accommodate two internal porro prisms which are used to elongate the light path to enable higher magnifications than primitive field or "opera" glasses. Porro prism binoculars typically deliver exceptionally high optical quality at more affordable prices than roof prism binoculars of the same power rating.
